One of my passions in life is sparkling water. It all began in 2006 during a job training where there were free vending machines stocked with Klarbrunn. One can and I was hooked.
I had it everywhere; at my desk, in my car, in my room, in my purse. Soon I started to dabble in higher end mineral waters, mainly Perrier. Still nothing was as good as Klarbrunn.

After moving to Minnesota, I came to the sad realization that my dear Klarbrunn was not available. Sure I could get it when I visited (oh and i did) but there were times when I'd go months without a lime Klarbrunn. I tried to find a substitute: Fresca, LaCroix, Archer Farms, Schwepps club soda, but everything left me unfulfilled.

Until I found Mendota Sparkling (I get mine in a can)

Someday I will have my very own carbonation machine and never have to take out the recycling again.

Is there anything worse than having someone offer you a cup of tea only to have them whip out a box of BIGELOW?

Sometimes I'll find a rogue packet of BIGELOW in my tea stash and I'll shudder. I haven't bought this stuff in years but yet it has followed me through 3 cities. No matter how hard I try I can't get rid of it. I'm not even that much of a tea snob, I just hate this crap.

My main problems with it are:

1. the packaging. its vomit inducing

2. it tastes like crap (esp their "fruit" varieties)

3. the fact that the word BIGELOW is in all caps

A coalition of top musicians, including R.E.M. and Pearl Jam, want to know if their music was used by the U.S. military as part of controversial interrogation methods at the detention facility at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

Several former Guantanamo detainees have filed lawsuits against the U.S. government, saying they were tortured with numerous techniques, including loud music.

"It's very scary to think that you might go crazy because of the music, because of the loud noise," said Ruhal Ahmed, one of the former detainees who has filed a lawsuit. He said he had to listen to hours of headbanging music while held prisoner at Guantanamo in 2003.

Loud music has not been used at Guantanamo since the fall of 2003, following a Department of Defense review of detention operations and interrogation techniques, according to Maj. Diana Haynie, a Joint Task Force Guantanamo spokeswoman.

Say goodbye to big screen classics

Though DVD sales are down, current movies are still guaranteed a DVD release. But for anything made earlier, collectors may be out of luck. Most of the studios have trimmed their schedule of classic movies on DVD to almost nothing. Even the prestigious Criterion Collection has cut back the number of classic foreign movies it releases, and brought out a much-derided current film, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, to make extra money. George Feltenstein, a senior vice-president at Warner Home Video (which still has some classics scheduled), says that “most of the studios have pretty much said ‘Screw it, we’re out of here, we’re not going to do this.’ ”

Older movies are particularly vulnerable because the cost of restoration is growing, and their fan base is shrinking. It used to be that TV broadcasting built a market for old movies; Humphrey Bogart became a cult figure after his death, thanks to TV. But today, the only station that shows old films is Turner Classic Movies. And DVDs can’t sell based on the purchasing power of TCM viewers alone.

Because classics are a niche market, they were the first to go when chain stores like Wal-Mart and Best Buy decided which movies they wouldn’t stock; Feltenstein says that many chain-store buyers “think an old classic movie is The Silence of the Lambs.” And though the high-definition DVD format, Blu-Ray, is seen by some observers as a possible saviour of home video, it actually is making things worse for classics. Warner released a few popular titles in the format (including Casablanca) and found that, “classics are having a tough time on Blu-Ray. New films do great, but people don’t know how great old movies can look in this format.”

It’s not as if studios have simply run out of movies worth releasing. Many of the greatest movies of the ’30s through the ’50s are unavailable on North American DVD, like Leo McCarey’s comedy Ruggles of Red Gap starring Charles Laughton, or Douglas Sirk’s The Tarnished Angels with Rock Hudson, often considered the best adaptation of a William Faulkner novel. But such titles don’t have the name recognition that would win them a spot on Best Buy shelves.

With stores turning them away, old movies may need to find a home online. Warner Brothers recently unveiled the “Warner Archive,” an Internet catalogue allowing U.S. movie fans (not Canadians, yet) to order burn-on-demand DVDs of obscure titles starring the likes of Clark Gable, Joan Crawford and Cary Grant. The discs and transfers are not always up to the highest standards, but they offer important films that stores wouldn’t stock, like The Shopworn Angel and Three Comrades, two romantic dramas by cult director Frank Borzage and almost-forgotten movie star Margaret Sullavan.

If this idea is imitated by other studios, classic movie releases won’t be as great-looking as they used to be; Feltenstein says that while the response to the archive “has been extraordinarily positive,” there are some complaints from fans who have been trained by DVD to “want everything now, and everything in the best possible quality.” Still, most movie lovers seem like they’ll be happy to get these films in any form. The writer of the popular movie blog Self-Styled Siren approves of the archive idea, because the most important thing is to keep old films in circulation. “These movies can’t live for a general audience,” she says, “if they’re circulating like rare baseball cards.”

Oh Yes Please

step 1Ingredients

To make these tasty treats, round up the following:

Ice cream cones
Ice cream in your favorite flavors
2 bottles Smucker's Magic Shell / Hershey's Shell / Ice Magic or make your own! (recipe follows) - covers 6-9 cones
Nuts (opt.)

step 2Magic Shell Recipe

Homemade Magic Shell

2 cup (300 g) chocolate chips or finely chopped chocolate
1 cup (200 g) of refined coconut oil
pinch of salt

Combine the ingredients in a microwave-safe bowl and nuke until almost, but not completely liquid. Stir to finish the melting.

For easiest use, pour melted mixture into a squeeze bottle. The mixture does not need to be refrigerated for storage. It will be liquid at room temperature in the warm summer months, and will be hard during the winter.

To reheat the Magic Shell, heat in the microwave (~ 40 seconds twice at 80% power), or sit the closed container in a cup of hot water for about 10 minutes.

Nestle's Drumsticks have a delicious chocolate-coated sugar cone.

Drizzle Magic Shell into the cones and swirling to coat.
For an extra treat, add a maraschino cherry or frozen berry to the bottom of the cone
Pop 'em in the freezer for a good 10 minutes.
While you're waiting, take the ice cream out of the freezer to let it soften up.

step 5Make the Magical Innards

Drumsticks sometimes have a mysterious, magical chocolate center! They didn't when I was a kid, but I fully support this new addition.

To make our chocolatey guts, we'll need:

Wax or parchment paper
Scissors
Tape
Pencil, pen, chopstick or something similar in shape.

Make small cones with the wax paper around your pencil and tape.

Fill the paper cones with Magic Shell and freeze!

step 6Fill with Ice Cream

By the time your ice cream is nice and melty, all of the stuff in the freezer should be ready!

Wrap your cones in wax paper, and cut tops to about 2" above the edge of the cone. (I made a template so I could cut 6 at a time.)
Fill cones with melty ice cream up to the top of the cone.
Unwrap the chocolate spears you made and place them in the cones
Top off the cones with remaining ice cream to within 1/2" of the wax paper

Return to freezer for a few minutes

step 7Top Off

If you're topping with nuts, make sure they're finely crushed.

Place nuts in a plastic bag
Smash with a hammer

Remove cones from freezer.

Pour a small amount of Magic Shell on top of the cones. Quickly add chopped nuts (now that the ice cream's refrozen, the magic shell will set up quickly!)
Alternatively, leave the cones in the freezer until very firm, remove wax paper and dip the entire top of the cone into a bowl of magic shell and sprinkle with chopped nuts.

Wrap in decorative paper for extra wow! These make awesome party treats.

Please allow me to share with you how "The Secret" changed my life and in a very real and substantive way allowed me to overcome a severe crisis in my personal life. It is well known that the premise of "The Secret" is the science of attracting the things in life that you desire and need and in removing from your life those things that you don't want. Before finding this book, I knew nothing of these principles, the process of positive visualization, and had actually engaged in reckless behaviors to the point of endangering my own life and wellbeing.

At age 36, I found myself in a medium security prison serving 3-5 years for destruction of government property and public intoxication. This was stiff punishment for drunkenly defecating in a mailbox but as the judge pointed out, this was my third conviction for the exact same crime. I obviously had an alcohol problem and a deep and intense disrespect for the postal system, but even more importantly I was ignoring the very fabric of our metaphysical reality and inviting destructive influences into my life.

My fourth day in prison was the first day that I was allowed in general population and while in the recreation yard I was approached by a prisoner named Marcus who calmly informed me that as a new prisoner I had been purchased by him for three packs of Winston cigarettes and 8 ounces of Pruno (prison wine). Marcus elaborated further that I could expect to be raped by him on a daily basis and that I had pretty eyes.

Needless to say, I was deeply shocked that my life had sunk to this level. Although I've never been homophobic I was discovering that I was very rape phobic and dismayed by my overall personal street value of roughly $15. I returned to my cell and sat very quietly, searching myself for answers on how I could improve my life and distance myself from harmful outside influences. At that point, in what I consider to be a miraculous moment, my cell mate Jim Norton informed me that he knew about the Marcus situation and that he had something that could solve my problems. He handed me a copy of "The Secret". Normally I wouldn't have turned to a self help book to resolve such a severe and immediate threat but I literally didn't have any other available alternatives. I immediately opened the book and began to read.

The first few chapters deal with the essence of something called the "Law of Attraction" in which a primal universal force is available to us and can be harnessed for the betterment of our lives. The theoretical nature of the first few chapters wasn't exactly putting me at peace. In fact, I had never meditated and had great difficulty with closing out the chaotic noises of the prison and visualizing the positive changes that I so dearly needed. It was when I reached Chapter 6 "The Secret to Relationships" that I realized how this book could help me distance myself from Marcus and his negative intentions. Starting with chapter six there was a cavity carved into the book and in that cavity was a prison shiv. This particular shiv was a toothbrush with a handle that had been repeatedly melted and ground into a razor sharp point.

The next day in the exercise yard I carried "The Secret" with me and when Marcus approached me I opened the book and stabbed him in the neck. The next eight weeks in solitary confinement provided ample time to practice positive visualization and the 16 hours per day of absolute darkness made visualization about the only thing that I actually could do. I'm not sure that everybody's life will be changed in such a dramatic way by this book but I'm very thankful to have found it and will continue to recommend it heartily.

Fool's Gold Loaf is a sandwich made by a restaurant in Denver, Colorado called the Colorado Mine Company (often erroneously referred to as the Colorado Gold Mine Company). The sandwich consists of a single loaf of hollowed out, warmed bread filled with one jar of creamy peanut butter, one jar of grape jelly, and a pound of bacon. They spent three hours in the hangar eating the sandwiches, washing them down with Perrier and champagne . When they were done, they flew back to Memphis without ever having left the airport.

I had the phrase "there will be no..." in my head but I couldn't remember what the end of it was. "Tilt-shift" actually encompasses two different types of movements: rotation of the lens relative to the image plane, called tilt, and movement of the lens parallel to the image plane, called shift. Tilt is used to control the orientation of the plane of focus (PoF), and hence the part of an image that appears sharp. Shift is used to control perspective, often involving the convergence of vertical parallel lines, as when photographing tall buildings. In many cases, "tilt-shift photography" refers to the use of tilt and a large aperature to achieve a very shallow depth of field.

This is going to be my spring/summer project. I need to know how to do this (without photoshop) before I get to Niagara Falls.

Marijuana testicular cancer link

Frequent or long-term marijuana use may raise a man's risk of testicular cancer, American research suggests.

The study of 369 men, published in the journal Cancer, found being a regular marijuana user doubled the risk compared to those who never smoked it.

The results suggest that it may be linked to the most aggressive form of the cancer.

The study from scientists at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle is the first to look specifically at marijuana use in relation to the disease.

Even after adjusting the figures to take account of the other known risk factors, marijuana use remained a clear risk factor for testicular cancer.

Just being a marijuana smoker seemed to carry a 70% extra risk, while those who smoked it regularly, or had smoked from an early age, had twice the risk compared to those who had never smoked it.

A connection was made to nonseminoma, a fast-growing form of testicular cancer which accounts for approximately 40% of all cases, and tends to strike younger.

Dr Janet Daling, one of the authors, said that puberty might be a "window of opportunity" during which boys were more vulnerable to environmental factors such as the chemicals in marijuana.

"This is consistent with the study's findings that the elevated risk of nonseminoma-type testicular cancer in particular was associated with marijuana use prior to 18," she said.

Another research, Dr Stephen Schwartz, said: "What young men should know is first, we know very little about the long-term health consequences of marijuana smoking, especially heavy marijuana smoking, and second, our study provides some evidence that testicular cancer could be one adverse consequence."
